Beijing and Shanghai

When we got off the plane in Beijing, we called a local couchsurfing buddy, Xiaosu, who invited us for dinner and sleeping arrangements.

On the last day in Beijing, after visiting the forbidden city, two nicely dressed and Chinese tourist looking gentlemen politely greeted us. “Hui”, a 40 year old stomach surgeon and “andy”, approximately 25 years of age, studying to become a doctor. The two were from shanghai, but visiting beijing for a medical conference. Their English was quite well, and we walked with them around tianamen square and some old streets nearby. Outside a tea store, hui asked us if we wanted to join them for a cup of tea.

A Chinese girl served us all many different tea samples, while telling stories about how the teas affect the bodyparts. She tried to sell us some, but the prices were rediculous in china scale, about 40 dollars for the cheapest pack of tea. We declined but were presented with a bill of 200 dollars to split with our new friends for just the samples. At this point we asked for IDs from hui and buddy. But unfortunately they had left it at the hotel. Odd, because the Chinese must carry IDs at all times when outside.

We left rightaway without paying anything. Hui and andy had spent about an hour and a half on us, and we had a lot of different free tea.

Their stories were very convincing and we are a bit unsatisfied that we couldnt prove any inconsistencies in them, although we tried. We decided to go back to the place we were picked up and attempt to find some new scammers to play with.
No matter how much we tried to look like fresh blue eyed tourists, we weren’t successful.

We spent 3 days in Beijing before flying to shanghai (we had originally planned to take the train, but a Chinese national holiday came in the way).

Now for something completely different.

On our flight from Moscow to Beijing we had a 5 hour stopover in Dubai. We went out of the airport to  catch a cab that drove us around for 3 hours, these are the things we saw.

Moscow Nights Roundup

Writing this on the connecting flight from Moscow to Dubai, in about 12 hours we will be in Beijing.
Because both of us have been to Moscow before, most of our time was spent visiting friends and going out every night.

Moscow has extremely nice cosy small cafes and bars with reasonable prices, but the good places are always very hidden, often behind basement doors with no signs. Luckily, we had many FRIENDZ to show us these places! To get around we jumped the metro, or just hauled private cars for cheap cab rides.

Monday was a generic tourist attraction day to go see the kremlin and the red square.
Tuesday we entered the dorms of Moscow State University, which resides in an old beautiful building. (We got to the roof of the building through a window in a dorm room)

Wednesday we went inside an abandoned construction site, to get on top a skyscraper for a splendid view of the city.

Thursday and friday was spent at Sveta’s and Natasha’s and going out.

Saturday we went to an old cold war nuclear shelter situated 60 meters below ground, and after that we spent the night in front of the fireplace at Anyas datcha (summerhouse), an hours drive outside moscow (pictures are currently in development).

See you soon Forrest, Anya, Sveta, Natasha, Lisa, Rob, Olga, Philipp, Katcha, Andrei, Sasha and everyone else!

The first flight to go around the world takes off in 9 hours, but I haven’t started packing because I have a few unresolved work issues.

Most of my clothes are wet because I didn’t wash in good time, and hangovers from Fridays Goodbye/Masters party are still haunting.

Preparing for a world trip is really tough work :).
